Mistral Large 4: the French lab releases open weights for a model with a trillion parameters
On 29 October 2026 Mistral AI released the open weights of Large 4 on Hugging Face, a multimodal model of roughly one trillion parameters. It is also available through the API, and Microsoft Foundry is the first cloud to offer it.
On 29 October 2026 the French lab Mistral AI published the open weights of Mistral Large 4 on Hugging Face. According to the company it is a multimodal model with about one trillion parameters. Mistral recommends deploying it with vLLM or SGLang, which means you can run it on your own hardware and keep full control.
The license is called Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight, and Mistral describes it as a modified MIT license. A company should read the terms, especially for commercial use, before building a product on it. Downloadable weights do not mean the same thing as fully open source software.
Besides the download, the model is available through Mistral's API, and Microsoft was the first cloud provider to offer it, in Foundry. TNW reports that a quantised version runs on four Nvidia B200 or B300 GPUs. Benchmark results so far come from Mistral itself and independent replication is still pending, so we do not repeat them here.
For Europe the interesting part is that a large model from a European vendor can run inside the EU without sending data to a US provider. The compute requirements are high, though. Hardware of this class is too expensive for most companies, so for most the API or a hosted variant is the practical route.
What it means for companies
For Czech companies Large 4 is one more option for placing AI that touches sensitive data: in the EU, in a cloud with European data residency, or on your own infrastructure.
