Anthropic and the US GSA: 40% discount on Claude for government with no minimum spend
Anthropic has expanded its partnership with the US General Services Administration. Government organisations get 40% off Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the API with no minimum spend. The company says about 500 government bodies use Claude.
On 27 October 2026 Anthropic announced a new agreement with the US General Services Administration (GSA). Government partners get 40% off Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API. The discount applies to direct purchases now and to purchases through cloud providers in the coming months, and it extends to state, local and tribal governments. There is no minimum spend, so organisations pay only for what they use. Anthropic estimates the discount will save the government $1 billion.
The company also cites adoption figures: about 500 US federal, state and local organisations use Claude, weekly active users of Claude for Government are up roughly eightfold since February, and usage across federal civilian agencies grew about twentyfold in a year. These numbers come from Anthropic and have not been independently verified.
The deployment examples are more interesting than the discount. Utah gave Claude Code to 34 developers across ten agencies; in a four-week pilot 80% had a working environment within 30 minutes and 71% reported saving more than 20 hours. One state IT developer moved nearly 900 API methods to a new framework in two days on a project scoped at a month. This is Anthropic's own account.
Security is the other half of the story. Claude for Government, generally available since 30 September, offers near feature parity with the commercial product at FedRAMP High, meaning it can handle the most sensitive unclassified work. Claude on Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI is FedRAMP High authorised, and Claude Enterprise is in the process for the Moderate level. Agencies buy through the GSA Multiple Award Schedule.
What it means for companies
For European companies this is not a US subsidy story. It is a signal that large language models are entering regulated environments and that volume pricing is falling. If you supply the public sector, expect buyers to ask where the AI runs and who can access the data. In Europe the reference point is the AI Act for companies, and for sensitive data EU hosting or on-premise deployment makes sense. If you want to roll out Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini safely, we help with ChatGPT and Claude for business. A specific process such as preparing quotes can become a custom AI agent with human approval for steps that have consequences, from EUR 5,000 and with a free prototype within 3 working days.
