Workday buys C1.ai: AI agents get their own identity and access rights

At Workday Rising in Las Vegas, Workday announced an agreement to acquire C1.ai, a platform that manages how people and AI agents access company systems.

C1.ai connects to email, CRM, code repositories, finance systems and cloud infrastructure and controls who, or what, can access each one. Access is granted only while it is needed and removed afterwards. Workday wants to become the identity layer for both people and agents.

Workday cites research saying 95% of large US companies already run autonomous agents, while only 21% have a mature way to govern them, according to Deloitte. The price and closing date were not disclosed.

What it means for companies

An agent that works in your CRM or accounting system needs access rights set up as carefully as a new hire. In our projects an agent gets only the access it needs, and a person approves anything with consequences.
