ChatGPT is merging its Chat and Work tabs and sharing one usage limit with Codex
OpenAI told users by email that it will merge the Chat and Work tabs in ChatGPT. Codex stays separate, but from December it will share a single usage allowance with ChatGPT.
OpenAI is emailing ChatGPT users to say that the Chat and Work tabs in the desktop app will become one experience. TechCrunch reported it on 2 November 2026. The merged version will first go to a select group of users for feedback before a wider rollout. According to 9to5Mac, the older ChatGPT Classic app is being retired at the same time.
Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, stays in the app as a separate experience. What changes is metering: reports that point to OpenAI's help center say that from December ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance on the Plus, Pro and Business plans. TechCrunch notes that most people will not notice, but heavy users may wait for resets more often.
The change reflects a shift from chat to agent work. The Work tab handles longer tasks that ChatGPT carries out on its own, such as preparing material or going through documents. Once chat and agent work are one surface, users stop distinguishing between asking a question and handing over a task. For companies this has a practical consequence: consumption becomes harder to predict from the number of questions asked, because one agent task uses far more than a short answer.
It also shows the gap between a tool built for individuals and a solution built for a team. A shared limit, a moving interface and plans aimed at individuals mean the rules can change in the middle of a project. Any business that built internal routines on ChatGPT should expect tab names and behaviour to keep changing.
What it means for companies
Before December, a company should check how much its people really use ChatGPT and decide whether paid plans are enough or a dedicated solution fits better. If a team uses ChatGPT for customer support, email or document handling, consider a custom AI agent with predictable costs and human approval for actions with consequences.
